Martin's News Flash

28/3/08

The ongoing debate regarding increasing the fish population at Crofton Lake will soon be put to bed following a key partnership with a local business.  Details will be discussed at the coming AGM, so please try and turn up and have your say on the future of the club ! We will be looking for commitment from members in what will be the most important year since the club was founded, and strong support for the committee is vital over the coming months.

27/2/08

Fishing was extremely difficult, with only three bream being the saving grace on a day when nothing seemed to be interested in feeding. The argument regarding lack of fish raised it's head again, and on this subject it should be noted that the committee is working hard to secure the long term future of the club. We have already secured a stock pond, so in the long term we will have fish to stock on a yearly basis, this will improve the stocking density which is half the problem during the winter months. All the work being done in the background regarding Crofton will be highlighted at the AGM to be held in April, so I would also ask that all anglers have patience, as there is still a clear plan of improvement in place which will deliver a better future for Crofton Lake.

Other News is that the Carlisle Angling Association has agreed to extend the riverfishing on the city waters of the Eden until the 14Th March 2008, this should encourage anglers to try the good grayling/chub sport to be had on the river.

Other News is that the Carlisle Angling Association has agreed to extend the river fishing on the city waters of the Eden until the 14Th March 2008, this should encourage anglers to try the good grayling/chub sport to be had on the river.

21/1/08

Over the last week there has been two types of fishing that has delivered results. The first being sitting out on the feeder and playing the waiting game for the odd bream, or the second using the waggler to target rising fish.

The second method has  delivered a more productive days fishing, with good bags of chub/roach. The chub seem to be drawn to the splash of the waggler and casting to a rising fish has netted 20/30 chub and roach in a session. This method will not only save the angler from blanking but also offers good sport, so give it a try.

The second last winter league match is being held at Crofton on Sunday the 27Th January, and it looks like a few of the crofton sharks will be turning up, so this will mix it up for the match anglers, who could find it hard to feature in the top three.

14/1/08

Ten anglers fished the match in poor conditions due to the changeable weather over the past few weeks.  Dave White came first with two bream caught in a twenty minute spell just after 1.00pm, Martin Chandler came second with a common carp of 6lb caught with his first cast of the day. The Crofton winter league was won by Sean Cordless by only a couple of points in front of  Martin Chandler who came in a close second.

Anyone going to Crofton over the coming weeks should try marzipan, as Jimmy swears by it and  has been catching carp on a regular basis using it straight on the hook. I have checked his breath and he seemed sober, however you can never tell as he normally dribbles !

Dave Gillies weekly Crofton update.

October 21st

Fishing has took a big nose dive with anglers reporting poor catches. Odd carp and bream showing with low catches of small perch and gudgeon, A settled spell should see improvements with the big perch hopefully making their seasonal appearance. Crofton Lake to be reserved until 10am for club winter league match 21-10-07  8,45am draw .

October 2nd

Cooler weather has effected the fishing this week with catches down on previous weeks although carp sport has not suffered with good numbers showing with dave white winning the latest knock up match with some good carp for 35lb. A winter league is to be run on Crofton lake for the first time this season and is open to members only. The matches will be 5 hours long and the fee £10 all in 8.45am draw The first match will be on October 14th with the rest of the dates to be posted on the fixture list soon. The matches will be pegged down and not ran as a walk off.

20th September

The heaviest fish ever caught in a match at Crofton lake was good enough for Alan  Routledge to win the Crofton challenge match, a cracking common weighing 18lb 5oz, Pete Wilson second 17lb and pete brown third with 9lb 5oz . A hard match again with the first heavy rain and gale force winds for weeks ruining any chance of a decent match once again.

9th September

Plenty of skimmers showing up to a pound and quality roach starting to make an appearance. The successful method at the moment is simply on the open ended feeder with a hook full of maggots which is catching skimmers and bream of a good mixed size changing to corn to winkle out some better fish. Boilies a must for carp to avoid so called nuisance fish.

The annual Crofton Challenge match is to be held 16--9--07 with an 8.45am draw at Crofton lake. The match is for members only with the event been a two rod match and the match winner receiving next years membership along with their cash winnings. Fee £10 all in and the lake been  reserved until 10am

21th August

The club pairs took place on a rock hard Crofton lake last weekend with chris Scott and Dave Gillies completing the hat trick with 4 points and a low combined weight of 6lb of  silver fish. Dave white and Ian Nevitt  also with 4 points where runners up with 4lb 14oz of skimmers .A close and hard match with heavy overnight rain and low temperatures taking its toll on the very shallow venue. Double figure carp more numerous with some nice fish showing, I am sure we will see the fist Crofton 20 this season. Gudgeon are finally starting to make a late appearance with the roach sport starting to show signs of improvement also.

17th August

More details on the marvellous carp pleasure catch by Paul Forster. Commons of 11lb x3  10lbx5  9lbx2  8lbx1  4 smaller fish between 3lb and 5lb.Paul has also been amongst the bigger carp again with a 17lb 15oz mirror carp. Mark Bendle has also had some heavy weight action on 11th Aug with commons 18lb 4oz and 14lb 6oz two tens and two 6lb bream for a day ticket bag of around 65 lb.

A work party is to be held on wed evening 5pm 22nd Aug to install new platforms and tidy up cut branches (all welcome)

The club pairs match is to be held for its members at Crofton this Sunday 19th Aug with the lake reserved for this until 10am ------------8,45 draw

July 19th 2007

The lake record has been broken for a pleasure catch consisting of 15 carp for over 130lb .this catch was taken by one lucky day ticket angler on two rods with a conventional boilie ledger approach. The same day with the big fish in a feeding mood loads of bream where taken from different parts of the lake by most anglers. Roach are also starting to show in small numbers which should lead to some good sport towards the later summer when most smaller species seem to wake up

July 7th 2007

Rumour has it that an 18lb miirror carp has been landed from the bay area of the lake with some decent nets of bream showing (50lb plus). Evening match weights are good  needing 20lb to win them. Work on installing new platforms is to begin soon with midweek work parties open to any help from members with no charge for helping out! contact any committee member.

June 20th 2007

Loads of extra water poring into the lake due to heavy rainfall has had a negative effect with the fishing taking a nose dive. Carp however seem a little more responsive with spawning nearing its end. Silver fish are showing very little interest in a bait with the bream not responding as well due to the unseasonal weather. Fish should respond if the weather becomes more seasonal

June 4th 2007

bream are making up some cracking pleasure nets with carp now  showing more regular as they seem to have stopped spawning. Sweetcorn the top bait for bream with fish turning up all over the lake making up some decent match weights (see fixture list} Two carp 17lb plus recently reported . Roach sport is poor with a spell of high pressure  weather badly needed .

May 20th 2007

Some good weights recorded in the first of the Friday evening league matches with Willie Bainbridge coming out on top with 19lb 10oz  Andy Davidson second 17lb 15oz Dave gullies 3rd 11llb 10oz Jeff Johnson 4th 11lb 5oz all anglers catching bream carp and tench. Jim porter landed a 16lb plus carp on the pole 20-5-07 from the canal section and Dave white reported a 60lb plus pleasure net midweek from peg 29.The  whole lake is looking good with the fishing on the up.

May 6th 2007

The first of the Friday evening matches saw nearly 90lb of fish weighed in between 7 anglers over a 2 1/2 hour match with mainly bream turning up with a winning weight of 24lb 01 oz 2nd 12lb 04 oz 3rd 11lb and it was no surprise to see the first low pressure weather system for 3 weeks moving in to kill the fishing on Crofton lake for the opening summer league match of 2007.Bream saved the day with every other species just not interested.1st 17lb 15oz 2nd 15lb 2oz 3rd 10lb 2oz.This week has also seen signs of carp spawning so the coming days and weeks should prove harder to tempt fish. An open match is to take place at Crofton lake on 12/5/07  9am draw fish 10am----4pm £10 all in plus £5 day ticket for non members with a 70% payout and tackle prizes.

May 4th 2007

Crofton lake is fishing better than ever with good bags of roach and skimmers to over 20lb and the first 50lb carp and bream nets been recorded this year with one angler bagging over 200lb in two days .Carp and tench of mixed sizes giving some good pleasure sessions and with the Friday evening matches starting for members only on may 4th decent weights are to be expected. Evening sessions proving  to be more consistent when it has been bright and sunny during the day.

April 18th 2007

Lake proving harder to fish because of  warmer brighter days although early morning and evening sessions proving very productive for carp with 16 year old Robert Richardson landing 5 low doubles alternating between peg 22 and 23.

Easter Mondays match at Crofton lake was to prove difficult for some of the field with the top three weights made up with silver fish coming from pegs 18--19--21. 1st M Chandler 9lb 5oz
2nd T Murphy 9lb 1oz
3rd S Dixon 9lb all wag mag.
Carp and bream where very scarce on the day but did show in good numbers for pleasure anglers over the holiday weekend with the newly stocked bream turning up in good numbers for the first time. Sweetcorn tempting better fish with the canal section fishing well.

March 30th 2007

Lake fishing better than late after cold snap. All species willing to pick up a bait with fishing good all over the lake. Tony Murphy landed a mirror carp 14 lb 11 oz  on the 25th and Jimmy Saville a 16lb 8oz common on 24th (howzabout that then)

March 14th 2007

Crofton lake is fishing better as each week passes closer to spring with all pegs producing fish .Skimmer bream are now turning up (6oz ----12oz) making up decent bags along with an endless supply of mixed roach tench perch gudgeon rudd and carp.

Phil Robins landed a common mid week weighing 16lb and Jim Porter likewise on sunday 15lb 5oz at the car park end of lake, ledgering  halibut pellet or pop up boilies .Soft hookable pellet keeps you away from smaller nuisance fish

March 4th 2007

A spell of settled milder weather has gave the carp a good appetite for anglers baits with sweet corn proving productive and carp showing signs of feeding all over the lake. Roach sport increasingly good with fish of all sizes showing throughout the lake. Also long lost gudgeon making an appearance in some swims; Big perch still active.

Any entries by members for the carp master trophy and the slim Baxter specimen shield have to be forwarded by Monday 19th march when the winners will be decided by the club committee.

February 20th 2007

Sport still productive with roach showing up on the north bank pegs now 37 to 40 .Carp and tench still making an appearance and big perch showing in good numbers with a 3lb plus perch reported.

February 11th 2007

The last days of January have been exceptionally mild bringing carp and tench on the feed like they would in the summer months. Jim Porter had a memorable catch with 7 pole caught carp from peg 33 in the bay ,fish between 3lb and 8lb. Saun Corless and Pete Armstrong both catching tench from pegs 16 and 17 on feeder and pole.
A cold snap then spoiled the fist weekend in February with sport slowing down although perch and roach did turn up from midday onwards

January 30th 2007

Mild weather this weekend has put the fish in a feeding mood with Sunday 28th seeing pleasure session weights improve dramatically with 3 anglers fishing pegs 16 17 18 catching over 40lb of quality perch between them, and with carp and bream showing up individual weights to 30lb recorded. Feeder is the successful method for some of the best January fishing on Crofton to date.

January 24th 2007

Sport has took a nose dive with all species proving hard to tempt although patience and perseverance should bring small roach on light pole approach or big  perch on small feeder. Occasional carp bream and even tench still turning up.

January 12th 2007

East end of the lake very productive for roach of all sizes, pegs 24 to 27 in the canal section bringing lots of fish. Occasional carp bream  tench and numerous big perch showing as it stays mild .Keep it simple on light feeder approach if windy. Waggler and pole working well away from rough areas which are  carrying an awkward tow. Caster and maggot baits a must

January 4th 2007

Stocking of roach and bream went well with a mixed quantity of healthy bream 1lb------3lb now in the lake.

Dave Gillies landed 9 perch on xmas eve for around 13 lb with fish 1lb 14 oz and 2lb 5oz pole maggot peg 16.Sean Corless also catching similar bag with a lake record perch of 2lb 15 oz caught new years day (a good hangover cure)

Joe Wilkowski found the carp in a feeding mood 3/1/07 5 small commons  5/12 6/8 4/5 5/4 5/8 and a nice mirror 13/4 all on bolt rig and boilies. Looking at the forecast with a milder stormy week ahead fishing should improve along these lines with those carp in a feeding mood.

December 24th 2006

Next weeks match 29 12 06 has been cancelled as a stocking of 350lb bream 250lb roach is to arrive that day. The lake will be closed to anglers for two days to allow the fish to settle in with angling resuming on 31st Dec followed by a one week keepnet ban..

Fishing of late has took a nose dive with bites hard to get although light feeder and patience still accounting for big perch. Look for roach activity and fish there as tight shoaling is starting to happen due to late cold snap. MERRY XMAS TO ALL

December 17th 2006

Match to be held at Crofton lake on 29/12 06 9.00am draw fish 10 till 3 members only £10 all in.

December 10th 2006

Plenty of roach perch and rudd still geting caught but not responding as quick to a bait. Two hours into a session should bring fish to the net. Carp still active with last two hours into evening bringing some fish.EA kindly introduced a further 1500 small roach to Crofton lake, many thanks the the EA.

December 1st 2006

Roach have  suddenly  decided to have a go with loads of smaller fish getting caught along with some bigger cousins. Also small carp 4oz to 6oz showing in good numbers (last years offspring ) for the fist time this season, this season seems to be working in reverse with some welcome surprises, is any where else experiencing this?

A knock up match was organised 26 11 06 as perch nets made way for some reasonable weights. However the bigger perch of late did not make an appearance and other species which where proving rock hard to catch suddenly wanted a bait with small carp roach gudgeon rudd and perch coming to most anglers for some low but encouraging weights with the winning weight 8lb 06oz.pegs 10 to 20 still productive with loads of bites on all lines.

November 24th 2006

Lots of big quality perch still getting caught with deeper water, producing pegs 10 to 20 fish to near and far shelf maggot and worm. Pick the right day and fishing for carp on ledger boilie is still productive for doubles and smaller carp. EA stocked a quantity of small roach last week into Crofton lake with more to come shortly, thanks EA

November 12th 2006

Quality perch still showing with one angler reported to have landed 25lb plus with one fish at 2lb 6oz and many between 10oz and 1 3/4 pound peg 20 holding plenty of these cracking fish down the inside .
Carp still very active with the best fish of the week falling to Bob Johnstone a ghostie of 14 lb 5oz  Bream and unseasonal tench making a rare appearance on maggot or worm baits

November 2nd 2006

Those long lost quality perch that have been missing all season have finally started to show with fish 1lb plus been reported caught which has coincided with a good bit of colour disappearing from the water. Also lots of activity from shoals of roach near dusk letting us know their still around and playing hard to catch. Fishing close to features and down the edge is proving most productive for plenty of smaller fish.

October 26 2006

After a lean spell of sport on the lake which is really strange for this time of the year reports suggest that the fishing has started to pick up again with loads of early morning carp activity pointing you in the right direction. Fishing to lily beds is producing good sport on heavy pole approach for carp and tench, with smaller silver fish and perch making a come back on maggot and worm with occasional good bream a bonus -----------------maybee we can stop panicking now (probably not)

August 13 2006

Halibut pellet working well under long pole or waggler plenty of carp between 2lb 3lb  bigger carp to double figures on bigger static baits also skimmers falling to soft pellet along with bream to 6lb loads of bites on maggot perch roach rudd 3 new wheel chair accessible stages constructed with easy access from a now larger car parking area also new larger stages with walkways are now been put in place around the lake.

August 25 2006

Club pairs match result 20/8/06 Crofton

Only 6 teams competed in this years pairs match and as Crofton had been fishing well of late a good match with decent weights was expected but a big low pressure weather system dashed those expectations. (sounds familiar)

Section A in the teens produced well for any angler targeting small roach but Pete Armstrong ignored this and won the section with 2 bream and a few bits 12lb 5 oz long pole. Chris Scott worked hard for 150 plus small roach some perch for 2nd in section all long pole 7lb 10 oz

Section B in the consistently productive 30's was seemingly devoid of fish with all anglers scratching around for ounces but Dave Gillies fishing wag mag had 2 bream to the net with small roach to win the section 11lb 5oz.Tony Murphy was second 1lb 10oz roach skimmers.

Result
1st C Scott D Gillies 3pts (retaining title for second year)
2nd P Brown P Armstrong 4pts

September 3  2006

Senior member Dave White has landed the biggest mirror carp of the year so far a fish of 16lb caught on the 31st of August. This could be a bit scary as the day princess Diana was killed I caught the biggest mirror in the lake august 31st .August 31st THE FOLLOWING YEAR Dennis McDermott caught the same fish again( it had not been caught for ages) I have got to see the photo of this fish, if it is the same fish I will be astonished

Oct 03 2006

News in that Sean Corless landed a 20 lb mirror from peg 28 on Sunday 1/10, caught on halibut pellet. The sport has been really slow over the past few weeks so I have found it difficult to post any positive feed back which is frustrating, however a nice bag of fish consisting of 4 bream 5 mirrors and 5 commons was taken from peg 28 on the pole by club member Dave Goodfellow early last week.

The final junior match was won by Ashley Rowlinson with ounces so this was very discouraging and really summed up a very poor series with many low weights and low attendances .The final standings are posted on the fixture page.
